After incorporating ChatGPT into my daily life and design process, I have discovered several effective ways to utilize it more efficiently. This led me to create advanced prompts to support my design work.

Before we dive in, it’s important to understand the limitations of ChatGPT. You may have come across various cautions about using GenAI. However, even with this knowledge, it’s easy to be swayed by ChatGPT’s seemingly logical and convincing responses. Therefore, it’s crucial for us to remember its limitations when interacting with it.

Understand the limitations of ChatGPT

1. Apply your own judgment before implementation

ChatGPT does not comprehend the information it provides (at least in human ways). Also, as of now, ChatGPT is not an expert and cannot replace professionals in various specialized fields.

2. Exercise caution when uploading private information

Before using ChatGPT, it’s worthwhile to understand how ChatGPT uses our data. If you’re using ChatGPT for design work through your personal account, ensure compliance with your company’s policies.

3. Watch out for hallucinations and bias

Most of us have noticed that ChatGPT can generate ‘hallucinations’ or false information, especially when asked specific questions without sufficient context. Regarding bias, since ChatGPT is trained on human-generated data, it inevitably reflects human biases.

I plan to write another article offering a more in-depth analysis of the limitations. For now, keep in mind these three tips to help you make informed and safe decisions about its use.

Now, let’s delve into advanced prompts that can be utilized in our professional work as product designers.

8 advanced prompts for 5 essential product design Use Cases

I have crafted and tested these eight advanced prompts specifically tailored for product designers. I aim to assist product designers in leveraging AI tools more effectively. Feel free to use these prompts with ChatGPT, adapting them to suit your needs. (Note: I’m using the pro version of ChatGPT.)

Using these pre-existing advanced prompts can serve as an excellent starting point. It will help you become accustomed to prompt engineering and enhance your skills in communicating with ChatGPT at a more sophisticated level.

In upcoming newsletters, I’ll provide detailed guidelines on how to create your own advanced prompts from the ground up.

1. Summarize user feedback data

Imagine you’re working on a customer-facing app and have gathered user feedback from the app store. Reviewing all comments is time-consuming, so try the following prompt for assistance.

💡 Tips: Make sure to put the content within < >.

What are some main takeaways from the following reviews:
<Insert reviews here>

2. Summarize user interview notes and extract key information

Suppose you’ve conducted user interviews and converted the audio to text. Use ChatGPT to summarize these notes and ask specific questions to extract relevant information.

💡 Tips:
1. Remember to protect user privacy and ensure compliance with your company’s privacy laws. If using a personal GPT account, all data provided becomes part of the training model. Caution is paramount here.
2. Note that ChatGPT has a context limit of approximately 25,000 words, including both the prompt and the response.

Summarize the following: <Insert text here>

Since ChatGPT can ‘remember’ previous prompts in a session, you can ask follow-up questions after providing the text.

💡 Tips: Notice here we have instructed ChatGPT not to fabricate answers if it doesn’t find relevant information in the provided text. This approach can help prevent hallucinations.

What did the previous text have to say about <topic>? If the answer cannot be found in the previous text, write "I could not find an answer." What are the main pain points mentioned in this text? If the answer cannot be found in the previous text, write "I could not find an answer."

3. Enhance case study writing

ChatGPT can assist in various ways with your writing. For starters, it can proofread and revise your drafts:

Proofread and improve the following text: <Insert Text Here>

A more advanced approach involves structuring your writing by providing more context:

Improve the following text on <Insert case study theme here> for a product design case study. The tone should be professional and aimed at design hiring managers. <Insert text Here>

4. Generate titles for case studies

Providing detailed context enables ChatGPT to suggest more relevant titles:

You will be provided with a design case study abstract and a suggested title for it. The design case study title should give the reader a good idea of the topic of the case study but should also be eye-catching. If the title does not meet these criteria, suggest 5 alternatives. Abstract: <insert abstract here> Title: <insert title here>

5. Critique and suggest improvements for case studies

ChatGPT can also offer a general critique of your case study drafts, serving as a helpful reference point:

Step 1: Critique this design case study for its clarity: <Insert text Here> Step 2: Suggest two ways to enhance the clarity.

Beyond these, ChatGPT can aid in tasks like competitor analysis and coding.
