Are we getting closer to a personal AI Assistant?

Years ago, I watched a science-fiction film called Her, which portrayed a man falling in love with his AI assistant. No spoilers here. It’s a good film with a surprising ending. What reminds me of this decade-old movie is Microsoft’s recent announcement of Copilot.

The upcoming version of Copilot will go live in Windows 11. It’s Microsoft’s “vision for everyday AI companion for you.”

In addition to common AI assistant functions like organizing and summarizing long text, several features caught my attention.

No.1 - Its ability to cross the entire Microsoft 365 to summarize and highlight key points

“Copilot gets to work combing through all your recent emails meetings even the ones you didn’t attend chats and files to get you up to speed in moments. It didn’t just summarize a single document it knew what sources to pull from and what information to extract from each.”

Pretty impressive. A common pain point I often encounter when using Generative AI is the summary quality. Everyone’s key takeaways could be different. If Copilot’s summary is accurate and personalized enough, it’s a great stepping stone toward a sophisticated AI assistant.

Another will be the privacy issue. Users will need to permit Copilot to access their working accounts. That might be a decision from the enterprise level.

No.2 - Copilot Lab

“Copilot gets to work combing through all your recent emails meetings even the ones you didn’t attend chats and files to get you up to speed in moments. It didn’t just summarize a single document it knew what sources to pull from and what information to extract from each.”

We are all familiar with the challenge of crafting a good enough prompt to generate the desired result. Microsoft seems to have developed this Copilot Lab as part of their user onboarding and education. It turns the new system into a learning environment, enabling people to learn a new way of working in their daily working context.

No.3 - DALL·E 3

The final thing that interested me was the DALL·E 3. Microsoft integrated it into Bing.

The upcoming DALL·E 3 “understands significantly more nuance and detail than the previous system.” The picture quality looks impressive in the preview.

As an Apple fan, I don’t want to be easily swayed. What about you? I’m curious to learn more after its launch.

Thanks for reading 🍵
